A Little Bit About Cherie Bennett

CHERIE BENNETT
Artistic Director

of the Shalom Theatre Company of Salt Lake City

Cherie, along with her husband and frequent writing partner Jeff Gottesfeld, just finished a two-year stint as Associate Head Writers of The Young and the Restless (CBS), the number one daytime drama for the last two decades. Before they joined Y&R, they wrote the Paramount/MTV Films Broken Bridges. In primetime, they were responsible for the underlying material for the CW’s Privileged, having penned the novel on which it was based, How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls. Also the author of a New York Times best selling series about teens that is wildly popular, written by her and her husband under a sudo name. Other TV credits include Smallville, the pilots for Televest Productions’ Girls Got Game, 19 Entertainment’s Philly, and story consultants for several other daytime dramas.
Cherie’s award winning novels (ALA Best Book, Children’s Choice Award, Best Books for Reluctant Readers, many state Best Books lists, many reading lists for middle schools and high schools, etc.) include: Anne Frank & Me, Life in the Fat Lane, A Heart Divided, Zink, and Searching for David’s Heart.
As a playwright, Cherie is a two-time winner of the Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices competition for new plays for young people or teens (Searching for David’s Heart, Cyra and Rocky). Her play Anne Frank & Me, which ran Off-Broadway to rave reviews in the New York Times, is one of the most produced plays for young people in the country. Many of her plays have been developed and produced by Youth Theater at the University of Utah. Her most recent play, Reviving Ophelia (based on Dr. Mary Pipher’s seminal book), was work-shopped at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and then received its world premiere at The University of Utah. Her plays are published by Dramatics Publishing. Cherie and her family live in Salt Lake City, Utah.

INTRODUCING...

OUR FIRST TWO PROJECTS:

Spring’09: A rehearsed, reader’s theater version of Cherie Bennett’s play SEARCHING FOR DAVID’S HEART. This play was the winner of New Visions/New Voices at the Kennedy Center and was made into an ABC Family Channel movie. It’s on the reading list of many middle schools in the Salt Lake City area. Auditions will be held in mid-April. The cast will include teens and adults. All actors will be paid an honorarium. The performance will be in late May.

Summer/Fall’09: A playwriting contest for middle school and high school students. Students are asked to submit a ten minute play on any one of the Ten Commandments. Submission deadline will be late September. The entries will be read by a panel of professors, teachers and theater artists. Three runner-up plays will be given rehearsed readings. The winner will receive a full production and a cash prize of $100. The four plays will make up an evening of theater. Performance will be in late autumn.

We will be giving birth to this exciting new theater project slowly, and on a small scale. We anticipate doing our first full-length production in the spring of 2010.
We welcome any and all who would like to be involved!
